Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Frequently Asked Question (FAQs)

What is meant by the term sheen?

The sheen is the gloss level of the paint.  These finishes can vary from a dull flat sheen to a higher reflective gloss finish.  Generally, the higher the gloss level the shinier the appearance and the more scrubbable the finish.

How do I know which sheen is right for my project?

Selecting the right sheen is important to ensure your complete satisfaction.  Keep in mind that the appearance of paint colors is also afffected by differences in gloss level.

What is meant by the term enamel?

The term is generally used for high quality, durable, dirt-resistant paints.  These coatings may be oil-based or latex, with a shiny or dull sheen.

Can oil-based paint be applied over latex paint or is it vice versa?

Latex paint can be applied over oil-based paint.  It is important, however, for the surface to be in good condition.  Wash the surface to remove all dirt and greasy, lightly sand glossy areas.  A primer is not required unless bare surfaces are showing.  An oil-based paint applied over an acrylic latex paint will result in coating failure.  Moisture that would normally evaporate through the latex coating is trapped by the oil-based paint.

Do I need to prep the surface?

Surface preparation is the key to a successful paint project.  A properly prepared surface allows for maximum adhesion and minimum bleed-though from stains.

  • Spackle nail holes, cracks and dents.
  • Lightly sand rough surfaces on interior walls to a smooth finish.
  • Wash off grease and dirt with a mild solution of TSP or similar household detergent.
  • Surfaces coated with semi-gloss or gloss paint should be lightly sanded to dull the finish and improve adhesion.

When should I use a primer?

A primer will aid in the adhesion of the topcoat and seal the surface for a uniform appearance.  Using the right primer can really make a difference in the finished project.  A primer is recommended for the following conditions:

  • Painting over a new or bare surface such as new wood, drywall or any other surface that has never been painted   before.
  • Making a color change such as going from a light color to dark or vice versa.
  • Seal a porous surface.
  • Prevent bleed-through from stains such as smoke, water, mildew and dirt.
  • Painting over wallpaper to prevent bleed-through from dyes.
  • Painting over a glossy surface.

Why do the darker colors require multiple coats for proper coverage?

The hiding power in paint is related to the amount of TiO2 (titanium dioxide) that it contains.  Dark colors are tinted in a clear base which does not contain any TiO2.  Adding TiO2, which is a white powder, to the dark color base would give the paint color a milky appearance.  To achieve the best possible results with fewer coats a tinted primer, such as Echelon Accent Color Primer, is recommended.

Will latex paint be damaged if it freezes?

Yes, it is important to keep latex paint in a cool, dry area away from extreme heat and cold temperatures.  To determine if the paint has been damaged allow it to thaw slowly and then thoroughly stir.  If the paint is damaged you will notice a separation of ingredients and the formation of lumps.  If it appears to have a smooth consistency with proper color and gloss retention it will be okay to use.

How do you remove mildew prior to painting an interior surface?

A simple solution of one part household bleach and three parts water will remove mildew.  Rinse the area with clean water to remove the bleach solution and allow the surface to dry thoroughly.  Heavy mildew may require additional applications, and scrubbing may be required.

Can I paint over wallpaper?

It is always best to remove wallpaper if at all possible.  Poorly applied wallpaper with visible signs of peeling, blistering or bubbling does not provide a sound surface for paint.  However, if the wallpaper is in good condition, it is usually possible to paint it with good results.  Use a good stain-blocking primer, such as Echelon Multi-Purpose Primer, as a first coat.  The primer will seal the surface and prevent bleed-through from wallpaper dye.

What is meant by the term VOCs?

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are chemical compounds, both natural and manufactured, which under normal conditions vaporize into the air.  There are thousands of products which emit VOCs.  Examples may include: cleaning supplies, building materials, automotive products, carpets and furniture, copiers and printers, pesticides, hobby and craft materials, cosmetics, and dry-cleaned fabrics to list just a few.  Most solvents, thinners and other ingredients used in paint formulations contain VOCs.  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established limits for the level of VOCs in paints.  The amount of VOCs emitted from paint coatings is extremely small compared to other products.
